i took my old Sanyo direct drive turntable out oif storage.When hooked to AUX input on my Yamaha amp it has low volume

My 25 year old Sanyo turntable has only a left and right RCA jack output. I hooked it to the AUX input on my new Yamaha home theater AMP. It sounds great but only produces low volume levels. Am I forgetting something in setup? Does an old turntable require a pre amp?
