I want to connect a projector 8 ohm speaker output to a mic input

We are converting 16mm sound film to digital and want to what we would be the best method to go direct from the projector speaker output to the mic input on the digital video camera.

Mixer?
Volumn Control?

At the moment with a headphones volume control connected we find the sound is overloaded and a hum is introduced.
