using a passive or active hdmi splitter from the hdmi output of the cable box, one going to hdmi 1 input of the Samsung widescreen, 2 going to tv input of Sony home theatre receiver - then to hdmi 2 input of the Samsung widescreen. Once both are connected hdmi signal is lost. Ultimately I would like to be able to watch the cable tv either with or without the home theatre.

Solution
You cannot connect the same input to the same TV twice! The signal will naturally be lost. If your Sony Receiver has got HDMI connectivity, and maybe ARC, connect everything up as normal, and simply just use the volume control for the tv speakers. You will need to check the "pass-thru" option that Alabalcho mentioned, so you can have the audio sent back to the tv when the A/V receiver is off.

This could be due to HDCP (copyright protection) implemented on the cable box (a measure to prevent unauthorized copying of TV programmes).

Check with your receiver' documentation - it might have "Pass-thru" option which connects directly an input to the output when receiver is OFF.
