IBM Thinkpad power problem

I plug in the power cord and the orange light comes on indicating
that the battery is charging, I press the power button it flashes
then nothing....any thoughts please

Take the battery out altogether and then connect the charger and try and power on. Sometimes with thinkpads if the battery fails altogether it won't allow the machine to power on.
