IBM Thinkpad T40 screen issue

I have an ibm thinpad t40, i had got it from someone else, it had been sold to me. one day the screen just went out. BUT, recently iv'e opened it and looked at it, cleaned it and the screen came back on, it was working. thn it just went out and I can't get the screen on. I have no idea how the screen came back on but it happened after i opened it. Any ideas on how to fix this?

when the screen goes out, dont close it. Shine a flashlight into it and see if the image is still there and its only the backlight that has gone out.;

the screen is just not on in general, just the "Z" light at the bottom, when i turn it off it doesn't beep. I know for a fact the speakers work too.

Hi, if you can see a picture on the screen with a light at an angle, maybe the inverter or the backlight is defective. If you can't, then the GPU is defective.

no, there is no light or anything coming off the screen, it is purely black.

Can you try an external monitor?
