I'm using IE and the alt key has stopped working for created emojis on Facebook. Help?

Alt key is not working on Facebook to create emojis with the number pad. Works fine in Word, just not on FB. Help?
When I hit the alt key, it brings me back to my own FB homepage.

This sounds like a facebook change/issue and not a laptop one.
