I've both (64-bit) Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.4 on my Inspiron N4030 Laptop with AMD Video card. One day, I've noticed something strange on both systems, The screen resolution suddenly changed to 800*600, I didn't give much attention to this so I changed it back to 1366*768 and continued my work. After that time, whenever I connect my laptop to an external monitor, even though my laptop is recognizing it but it only shows black light, Sometimes, even my desktop background changes to black (very strange huh?). Of course I've checked my settings and made sure that I'm allowing my external monitor to display my screen, but the problem remains, I think somehow this problem is relating to the sudden change on the resolution in both Windows & Ubuntu. Because before that I was working on external monitors without problem. I tried reinstalling VGA drivers but nothing. I still hope that it's not a hardware issue.

Hi,

Please do try this troubleshooting steps that may help in resolving that issue.

- Uninstall the graphics card driver from Device Manager
- Do the same in Programs and Features look for anything related to AMD and uninstall it as well.
- Download and install the graphics card driver from AMD support site
- Here's the link: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
- Reboot the laptop once driver has been installed.
- After the reboot make sure that your games are set to use AMD graphics card.
- Try connecting an external monitor and see if you'll get the display on it. Press the Windows key + P at the same time and select between "Extended or Duplicate" and press Enter.
