iPAQ Rebuild after ROM upgrade

Hi folks,

I've done this before but memory is not snapping too well tonight...

I've just downloaded the new ROM update for my 5555.

I have a current backup file (as of this afternoon).

Can I run Restore from ActiveSync after the ROM upgrade to re-install my
programs etc or will I need to install them and re-configure everything?

Thanks,

Terry

Terry, did it actually upgrade? I installed the posted upgrade and it still shows 1.0.13 instead of the 1.10 that was supposed to load.

I've heard the download links got swapped, you might try to download again. Can't remember the details but there should be some clues in the other posts.

Tim,

I haven't yet installed the upgrade. I don't have time right now to
re-install and reactivate all of my software. I use a lot of programs and
need all of them on a more-or-less daily basis (hence my question).

Some updates do not change the version #
that is displayed in Asset Viewer, this will
be stated on the page where you got the update.
Just a thought that crossed my mind.

You should not restore from earlier backups! To be sure that your PDA acts
properly you have to manually reinstall everything and synchronize your PIM
data with PC's MS Outlook database.

See
http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=235286:
HP posted two ROM updates, one to get to 1.10, one to restore
1.0.xx. The links got messed up at first, so you might want to
download the right ROM image, and try again.

Follow the instructions. Do a soft reset and put the PPC in the synch
cradle. The software will want you to create a partnership. Log in as
guest. Then restore your files. It will ask which backup you want to use.
Use the latest. It will overwrite everything on the PPC except the ROM.
Just did the update about 45 minutes ago. Works great.

well in my naivety, and keeness to upgrade the ROM on my ipaq 2210, I made a
back up before upgrading, then used it to restore after the upgrade!
Some programs worked, some needed to be re-installed, but as I only have a few
programs on board, this was no big deal.
The only thing that won't work is the former Diagnostics Toolkit (see previous
post), but this may be because it is replaced by Self Test on v1.10.

I thought you were not supposed to restore the backup? Can you please
clarify what you did here as I'm reading mixed messages here.

Cheers,

It really isn't advisable to restore a backup file after a ROM
upgrade. There might be small changes to system files which
could render the restored info to be not an exact match for the
current ROM, giving you strange behaviour as a result.

My advice would be to sync with Outlook for your PIM data and
sync your files before installing any ROM update, delete the
partnership name from Activesync on the desktop, install the ROM
update, rename your Pocket PC to the name you used before, sync
again (getting all your PIM info and files back on your PPC),
and install those apps you want to use. Most apps can be easily
reinstalled by using the Add/Remove Software from the Activesync
menu on the desktop.

I'm not going to dispute anything said below as it's always a good thing to
rebuild any Windows machine every now and then. OTOH, I don't have the time
available, nor did I load my PPC with the "current workstation" (see above)
to do an add/remove. It would all be from scratch.

The restore does seems to work well, but I have not tried each and every
app.

I understand the pain of having to rebuild a PPC, and sure, I don't
always appreciate the time that's involved with just that (multiple
Inbox accounts setup anyone?). Still, if you have the choice, I
wouldn't restore. You did and don't have any problems. Consider
yourself lucky, since attempts of restoring after a ROM upgrade in
other devices meant starting from scratch all over again...
