[citation][nom]patchez[/nom]couldn't they just power up the device and see if it contains OS 4.0?no one to my knowledge has actually put the OS on a different phone...[/citation]

It was remotely wiped. The most they can do is plug it into a computer and see the iTunes message on the phone.

How coincidental. Lost in a bar and in Engadget's hands before the weekend is over. Don't these thing have GPS and can't you recover a stolen one? I read a story here in Florida where one was stolen from Busch Gardens and they caught the guy in a few hours.

A phone just happens to be dropped in such a place and way that it ends up in the hands of one of Apples biggest fan blogs?

Yeah, I'll buy that for a dollar.

Look like an organized ''leak'' arranged by the marketing dept.

Like the false operation overlord plans that we planted on beach shores in 1944 by us.

Am I the only one that really doesn't think that looks like an iPhone? Side buttons? Weird media slots? Big chunky case? It looks more like a generation behind the current iPhones than a generation ahead.

[citation][nom]djhg2000[/nom]So it's been 4 generations an the iPhone still looks pretty much the same...Just me or is it becoming obvious Apple is running out of ideas?I mean, the original iPhone set a new standard for smartphones but all it has gained since is... 3G video calls, GPS, compass and minimal design changes? The iPad just fuels the fire, they are making desperate attempts at staying on top at this point.[/citation]
Don't forget Copy/Paste! lol

I'm sorry everyone. I know how exciting this is. But some guy didn't just 'lose' an iPhone 4G, and another guy didn't just 'find' it lying around. This is the expert Apple marketing department at full force, and to be frank I'm disappointed how many of you have been so easily taken in by it.

Oh god, this is only going to get worse and worse. I wish there was a way to filter apple-related news on TH.

If this thing was truly lost, then can you imagine the legal hell that could be forthcoming? Failing to contact the owner, the police, destruction of property on a prototype phone worth something in the area of a 1/4 million dollars or more.

I wouldn't want my name anywhere near this.

There once was a time when someone "dropped" something you'd try and figure out who that was and return it to the person. Yes, it may be the iPhone 4G prototype, which is a big story for those following it, but it kind of shows where we're at when the phone gets taken (i.e. stolen) and disassembled (i.e. vandalized).

A heavily modded phone found near geek Mecca.
It simply must be a commercial product, nobody runs custom firmware.

I think California law won't approve when the guy identifies his phone.

[citation][nom]tsnorquist[/nom]Why do I get the feeling someone's severed head will be sitting on Steve Jobs desk.[/citation]That poor Chinese guy... oh wait you meant whoever lost this phone. Gotcha.
