It was remotely wiped. The most they can do is plug it into a computer and see the iTunes message on the phone.

I'm sorry everyone. I know how exciting this is. But some guy didn't just 'lose' an iPhone 4G, and another guy didn't just 'find' it lying around. This is the expert Apple marketing department at full force, and to be frank I'm disappointed how many of you have been so easily taken in by it.

Oh god, this is only going to get worse and worse. I wish there was a way to filter apple-related news on TH.

If this thing was truly lost, then can you imagine the legal hell that could be forthcoming? Failing to contact the owner, the police, destruction of property on a prototype phone worth something in the area of a 1/4 million dollars or more.

There once was a time when someone "dropped" something you'd try and figure out who that was and return it to the person. Yes, it may be the iPhone 4G prototype, which is a big story for those following it, but it kind of shows where we're at when the phone gets taken (i.e. stolen) and disassembled (i.e. vandalized).
