Is it safe to carry around extra battery?

I'm thinking of purchasing a Lenovo Y500, the only thing stopping me is the 3hr battery life. I'm also considering the option of getting a second battery if necessary and carrying it around.

Is that safe, carrying around a second lithium ion battery in your backpack? Do other people do this? Could it cause damage to the battery or laptop if I'm constantly swapping one battery out for the other?

The only issue with a spare is shorting it out on something or leaving the battery in the sun. Both will kill the battery. Most power users pick up a plastic battery case to protect the unused battery. Laptops are made to swap batteries just be carefully not to break the battery lock clip.
