Is the Pebble Steel Compatible with an ipad 3?

Hi, I really want to get a pebble steel but I currently do not have a smart phone but have an ipad 3. I was wondering if I could connect the ipad to the watch and be able to do the same things on the watch. Also, I was wondering if i left my ipad at home with wifi, would the watch be able to recive texts, emails, or other stuff.

Another more unrelated questions is how is the fitness tracker on the pebble steel?
