Solved! Issues with 55" Sony Bravia LCD

I have a 55" Sony Bravia LCD purchased 8 years ago. When I turn it on half the screen is black and the other half has vertical lines. I tried a new HDMI cable and it worked. Turned it off for the night and back to the same problem the next day. Is there a solution or is my TV ready for the graveyard?
