I was watching a previously recorded show that ended at about 8:20PM. I then
switched to a live show that started at 8PM and tried to rewind it to the
beginning of the show 8PM. I could not get it any further back than 8:20 PM.

I thought that with live TV that Tivo was continually recording and
providing a 30 minute buffer so that you could go to a live TV show and
rewind back to the beginning of the show in progress. Why couldn't I rewind
back to 8PM?

Did you change the channel? The buffer is emptied when you change a channel.

Why tell me about your Tivo activities?
That your intelligence level rivals Norm's is nothing to brag about.

When you press the Live TV button, you can get up to 30 minutes of
whatever channel it is currently tuned to. Two things that can affect
the 30-minute buffer:

1) You had to change channels to get to the Live TV show you wanted.
The 30-minute buffer gets cleared by any channel change.
1a) You accidentally hit the Enter button, causing a channel change.

2) A show being recorded on the current channel finished less than
30 minutes ago.

I've had the latter happen several times. Program "A" is part of
a season pass with padding at the end. Program "B" is on now, on
the same channel. I hadn't planned on recording program "B", but
it looks interesting. Rewind goes to the beginning of the buffer,
which is not the beginning of the show. Press Pause at this point.
Go to Now Showing, select program "A". Skip to end, then back up
to where the padding started. Watch the 5 to 10 minutes of program
"B" that were recorded with program "A", tell TiVo to _not_ delete
this recording. Go back to Live TV which should still be paused
at the beginning of the buffer. Watch the rest of program "B".

If that does not answer your question, you will need to provide
more information. Single tuner (SA) or two tuners (DirecTV)?
When did previously recorded show start, when did it end, and
when did you finish watching it? Was the other show on the
same channel as the previously recorded one?
