I have a gigabyte aero 15x so I can speak to that.

Hardware wise, it is great. The one I got shipped with a newer keyboard which was supposed to fix the issues that earlier models had with keys not registering, etc.. I have not had a problem running any game and the thermals are actually pretty good.

One of the reasons I chose this one, as I'm also a student, is because of the size and battery. The battery is huge and lasts for a pretty long time on battery saver (in 4 hours I used about half through browsing and word processing). Don't expect much battery life while gaming but that's typical.

Before this one, I had a huge laptop that was thick and had less battery life. Let me tell you, size makes a huge difference at school. Having a computer that fits reasonably on any desk is something that I took for granted beforehand. It also doesn't scream "gamer" like some of your other choices do. For me, personally, I wouldn't want to be using an alienware in public, especially if it is a professional environment. This laptop has a good blend of professional looks with good internals.

The only thing I would say is a problem is the software. I've had some problems initially with software, but after good customization I was able to get it smoother. I'd rate it 4.5/5 if I had to give an absolute rating, just for the software that is unavoidable with it. Gigabyte is not a software company, and probably shouldn't try to be.
