laptop on battery automatically off but working well without battery

Hi

I have a Dell inspiron i5 4gb, about 3years old.
When I connect laptop to the charger with battery plugged in...it automatically turns off in few minutes
The laptop is working well without battery.


Help!

Do you get any warnings? My guess is its a protection feature for a dying/dead battery.

i don't get any warnings...it automatically turn off after few seconds

if the battery has a dead short the system may be shutting down. if not the old ac brick output may be going bad. if the old brick wires are looking bad look to ebay for new brick and replacement battery,

when i remove battery and connect the laptop with the charger and turn on directly it works well...but when i plugin the battery and even the laptop is connected to the charger..it turn off after around half a minute.
