So lately, my laptop (Clevo W350ET with GTX 660m, Intel HD 4000 integrated, Windows 8.1) has stopped recognizing my dedicated graphics card. I've had it for 2 years, and it's pretty much worked flawlessly until now.

When I look in the device manager, where it previously showed my GTX 660m, it says "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". It also says that the device isn't working, because it can't find the proper drivers (Code 31).

At first, the problem would go away with a reboot. The GTX 660m would again be listed in the device manager, working as usual. But since yesterday, this fix has stopped working.

This seems to be a driver issue, considering GPU-Z finds the card (although under the name "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter", but the nVIDIA-logo is there and all the specs seem correct). I tried installing new drivers (old ones as well as new ones), uninstalling the old ones with and without Driver Sweeper, but the installation wouldn't even run saying that my system isn't compatible with the drivers (which simply isn't true). I even did a complete factory restore and it still won't work.

I've also reset to default settings in BIOS, still no luck. I don't know what to do.

What's weird though is that sometimes the GTX 660m will randomly show up in the device manager and work as usual, but after the laptop has been shut down or restarted, the problem returns.

Does anyone have any clue what to do?

The driver is installed though, and it still doesn't recognize the card.

I have reinstalled Windows and installed the drivers in the order you suggested, but the problem is still present. I guess the chip is dying...

Thank you for your input.

It sounds like the chip is going out.

You shouldn't need to do this to get it working like it should, but, see whether you can install the driver within Safe Mode. This, sometimes, was a viable workaround when Windows wouldn't take the driver.

A last resort would be to reinstall Windows and install the drivers (chipset first, then Intel HD graphics), and then see whether the issue persists on this clean Windows install. If it does, the chip is probably on its last leg.

Time for a new laptop, because replacing the GPU would probably run about $200 plus other parts might be dying.

It actually varies more then you would think. For the ASUS republic of gamers G75VW the GTX 660m card can be had for about $200. Many high end laptop GPUs are separate from the motherboard.

Being a Clevo reseller, the board tends to go for over $200 on out of warranty replacements. If the whole main board can be found somewhere for right around $200, that would be a sweet deal. :)

This model's chip is definitely soldered to the motherboard; no MXM form factor here, unfortunately. :(
