Been out looking for a few weeks at hdtv's and this one for the money
and class looks to be the best tv I have seen. But being kinda new to
the scene looking for suggestions or downfalls before I go out and
purchase it. I've looked at the sony's, mitsubishi's and some of the
toshiba's and read alot of reviews and like the things I am hearing
about the hitachi.

Thanks,

Hitachi sets represent quality items that rank them with the best., as you
have already noted. May consider checking out some of the other web sites
regarding these sets.

These are the 4 brands that I usually recommend that people consider. From
a service perspective they are similar overall. There sill be performance
and service differences within brands as well. Hitachi has the advantage of
having open and free service support to any legitimate service shop, making
it more likely to find shops that can effectively service the sets in many
markets. Sony has excellent service support for ASCs. Mitsubishi is easily
the most consumer friendly company in terms of covering exceptional
situations beyond the warranty period and has good support for ASCs.
Toshiba probably has the weakest service support of the group and has had
more parts backorders than others in recent years, IME. Toshiba also at one
time had open service support to all shops but pulled this in favor of only
offering it to ASCs and NESDA members. In the Toshiba and Hitachi lines
there has typically been difference in performance and overall quality
between the low and high end products.

Personally, my favorites are the Mitsubishi products, considering all of the
factors.

Ultimately, I would decide based on the dealers and servicers in your area.
Best choice is a self servicing dealer with experienced techs who you can
negotiate to have calibrate the set as part of the deal and who can service
the product as an ASC. Next best is to know the local independent servicers
and buy the brand that is serviced by best, most experienced techs who are
ASC for that brand.

Do not bother with a service contract on one of these sets, but do get a
good surge suppressor that protects the a.c. and ALL lines into the system
such as satellite, cable, phone, etc. and verify the integrity of the
grounds on your a.c. service and all incoming lines. If you are in an area
with stable power and little lightning you might skip the surge suppressor.

I had a 51F500 (last years model) for about 3 months on a rental (just
to make sure it was what I wanted), when I decided I wanted to buy I
shoped around and found a 57T600 (57" rear projection Hitachi set with
integrated HDTV tuner for $2000), I've been very happy with both sets.

Looking at the 51F510, this is the 2004 version of the 51F500. From
the spec sheet, the sets look to be identical with the following
exceptions:

- Silver case on the 51F510 instead of black/dark grey cabinet.
- HDMI interface on the 51F510 replaces the standard DVI interface
found on the 51F500 (you can buy an adapter to use DVI devices with
HDMI)
- New remote control

Overall, I hate the look of the new Hitachi's and perfer the darker
wooden cabinets (which were more durable than the new silver plastic
cabs) and large universe remotes they offered on last years models.
Hitachi is trying to stay modern and compete with Sony.

Since the 2004 Hitachi models are still new to retailers, I'd
recommended searching for a 2003 model. I was in Conn's
http://www.conns.com (a local applicance retailer) and noted they have
all of last years Hitachis on sale. The 51F500 is going for about
$1400, the 65" 65S700 (MSRP $3400) with integrated HD ATSC tunner is
going for right at $2000. At the wrong retailer, you're likely to pay
around $2000 for the 51F510.

Regarding the letter grades on Hitachis. The F series is their
lower-end sets (still better than most manufactuers), followed their
high quality S and T series (award winning, and highly raved), and
their elite X (Director's series).

Having owned by a F and T model, I can tell you there is a noticable
difference in quality and this seems to hold true for the newer
models. So the picture quality on last years 51S500 or 51S700 is going
to look better than this years 51F510. Having seen the sets side by
side, at a retailer where I know the floor model product is properly
calibrated, I can tell you without doubt, this is true. So, there's
probably a bargin to be had for you and now is a great time to buy.

Leonard,

I would interested in hearing your opinion on Panasonic. We are still
enjoying the reliability of our 11+ year old Panasonic CRT TV and have a
Hitachi 43 inch that just failed and is in process of being repaired. This
recent failure, and other smaller issues with the Hitachi has "empowered" my
wife to comment that maybe a newer TV would be order for the family room,
her only comment being lets find one that works as well as the old Panasonic
in the bedroom (the implication here being buy a Panasonic). 11 years is a
lot years and having no experience with Panasonic service in that time I
would like to hear your thoughts.

If you are going to buy a PDP, look at the Panasonics. If you are going to
buy a CRT based RPTV they are not the equal in performance of the other four
brands discussed, IMO. In terms of service and support, similar to them.
Their direct view CRTs are OK, and would be one of the best choices after
Sony. Not a bad brand but nothing that would make me want to own one with
the other choices.
