Hello all, a friends home laptop (used to be his business laptop but retired) got ransomeware, asked me to fix it. Had to reinstall win7... again. Unfortunately due to the severity of his infection I was not able to even get in the laptop before the install to back up drivers first. I know there are drivers for win 7 because he got win 7 way back when it first came out and I installed it for him back then and his sound has worked fine all this time. I originally(the first time years ago) had to do a fresh win 7 install instead of an upgrade because his hidden partition(restore to default) was corrupted. the install went fine this time except there is now no sound. Plus, This time around lenovo has no audio drivers for win 7 (or even vista) at their site. I Some info on the laptop is:
thinkpad z60m 2311pu cpu 1.9 ghz
I tried to let windows update them but no results.
I cant figure out for sure what the sound cardbrand is, read online that it is either soundmax or realtek.
soundmaxx wont install says the hardware is wrong so I am assuming realtek. downloaded generic realtek but win7 goes right back to its own driver. I wanted to force install but am not sure which realtek.inf or .dll to force it to accept.
Any advice or links to a solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for reading.

hopefully its a realtek as they're usually the most compatible in my experience, like for example my hp laptop uses idt audio and wont work with xp for audio. but my acer desktop uses realtek and does work with xp for audio. have you tried using the xp driver for audio and tried installing that. if it doesn't work try: run as administrator, run in compatibility mode for windows xp, and run as administrator + run in compatibility mode for windows xp. if that doesn't work download this: http://www.3dpchip.com/3dpchip/3dp/chip_down_en.php and install it. you should then be able to get your audio driver. if not it should at least list the model of the sound card and maybe be able to get it from somewhere else on the internet. be careful with other programs that find drivers for your computer though as most of them are shit and install loads of annoying toolbars, etc.

edit: i forgot, also what you could do is (although its a bit annoying and only recommend it if nothing else works) is get an .iso file of xp and vista (you can probably find them from tpb) and burn them to a disc. then install xp, put all the drivers on there, then install vista and then install 7. and hopefully that would work, although im not sure and id only recommend doing this if NOTHING else worked. hope this helps.
