MURDER3R,

The post didn't mention the whole range of the "engineering apps" uses but to have a high versatility, reliability, and performance for (at least near) the budget, my suggestion is to consider a Dell Precision M6700 with an i7-3740QM and Quadro GPU, something like:

DELL PRECISION M6700 17.3" INTEL 4 CORE i7-3740QM 2.70GHZ 16GB RAM 1TB < Sold for $760

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-PRECISION-M6700-17-3-INTEL-4-CORE-i7-3740QM-2-70GHZ-16GB-RAM-1TB-/271933620131?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f5081bfa3&nma=true&si=m66XWLw%252BoKVdUOpN%252BMNDvOFs8mA%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

These have very good displays. most importantly, I think is the 17.3" size and some have Dell Ultrsharps, the i7-3740QM is 5-core @ 2.7 / 3.7Ghz and on;y 45W

The GPU in the completed auction is a QUADRO K3000M 4GB. The mobile K series are very good in 2D and 3D and of course can run the special workstation drivers for high anti-aliiasing and viewports.

This kind of laptop is about as versatile as a laptop for visualization, simulation, and rendering might be and of course, is setup to operate a desktop display, keyboard, mouse, run projectors at meetings, etc. I've never had a laptop, but over time have looked into the possibilities and my first choice for Autodesk, Adobe, scientific (MATLAB, NAMB), and Dessault (Solidworks, Catia) would be the current or (M6800) or penultimate series Dell Precision M.

If possible, be a bit flexible with the budget if you see one with an especially high specification GPU's as upgrading is so expensive.

Cheers,
