Is it plausible to use a high spec desktop pc, and a low mid spec laptop, and when more power is needed on the go (which would ideally be non frequently), simply remotely connect the laptop to the desktop, and use the desktops greater processing power like that?

I ask because I am going to college next year, and as such would like to switch to a lighter weight, longer battery life laptop, while I still will want to be able to do somewhat intensive tasks such as CAD, video editing, and gaming, as needed. My current 7 pound laptop with 1.5 hour battery life doesn't seem ideal in most college environments.

May I ask, why you would want to connect the laptop to the desktop for that?

Can you not simply use the Desktop for the processor intensive tasks? Or are you talking about connecting it via the internet. That is theoretically possible, indeed cloud computing is a big deal. But I am not sure how to do it in a feasible way. Maybe some sort of desktop sharing software would be an ad-hawk solution? No idea!
