You mean, like, to have an antenna, and a chip to receive gps signals and
convert them to NMEA output???

Nope, typically, software cannot mimic hardware like that. You will just
have to break down and spend the shekels to buy a gps receiver.

Shalom!

Is that the old Lotus Magellan software (dim memories....)?

You can't really run PC software on a ppc if that is what you are
asking. Perhaps if you give some more complete description of what you
want to try, what the software is and does, and what you want to do
some ideas may be forthcoming.

btw there are groups about GPS equipment, and I have a Garmin unit.

Are you asking if you can connect your Magellan GPS unit to a ppc and
run mapping software?

Perhaps a GPS newsgroup may be able to offer some help, but I think you
need to describe your target a little more completely.

To try to clarify this a bit more...

The two magellan mapping packages that I am aware of generate maps and
the newer ones allow some of the magellan gps units to "route"

None of the software nor the magellan generated maps are usable on the
ppc, but most of the magellan units have a serial output that can be
attached to any pocketpc with a serial port to provide gps input to ppc
gps programs. Most, but not all, Ipaq's have serial ports.

The easiest way to start with gps on the ppc is with Microsoft Streets
and Trips which comes with ppc mapping software and the ability to
generate custom maps for use on ppc's.

Once installed, Pocket Streets can use the serial gps input from the
magellan to show your current position on the ppc and track your
movements, but this software provides no "routing" capabilities.

There are several "routing" gps software programs for the ppc that you
can find by googling for POCKETPC GPS which vary in capabilities and
price.... again, post your specific needs, the exact equipment you now
have and we can begin to provide help with that starting point.
