Median battery light flashingk

my laptop is 7 yrs old and I run it now continually plugged in to the mains. Tonight although plugged in the screen just went black nobody home, but the On icon was lit and a green button on the power battery lead indicated power was still flowing. Nothing I did worked. Later I tried again and llife returned. But the battery icon is flashing, green in this case. Lap top is still,working but I.m wondering why icon is flashing. Should I splash out on new battery is that the problem do you think. Thanks for help
