Mod Mic 4.0 Not Working Correctly

When I first got my Mod Mic 4.0 it was very quiet and I had to change the setting and boosters a bit. This seemed to work, but only temporarily. Every so often I would get complaints in CS:GO or Payday 2 that my mic sound too quiet/inaudible. So every now and then I would change the volume and boost settings to magically get the mic to work. (I say magically, because none of the setting ever actually changed on their own to make the mic not work. I had to randomly adjust them to get the mic to work again.) This went on for about 3 months until now, because the mic won't work at all. I've tried changing the setting in Windows 10 and the Realtek Audio Manager.
The only solutions I've come across are to buy a sound card, because Realtek drivers are not good (supposedly), or my mic is broken and it needs to be replaced. What can I do to fix this?


Any and all solutions are accepted.

Note: I'm not very good with audio. This was my first attempt at building a headset and not buying a headset like Razer Krakens or Turtle Beaches. I'm using Sennheiser HD 558s, the Mod Mic and old Dell speakers for when I don't need headphones.

what is wrong? the first thing to do is run a few tests to figure that out.

A) test the modmic on another system you know works with 3.5mm microphones well. if you modmic works well there but not on your own computer then you have an issue with your own computer. if it still has an issue there it may be the modmic (i say may as its not guaranteed)

B) test another 3.5mm mic on your system. if you have the same issue its likely your computer.

C) remove your audio drivers and install the latest version. test with both the modmic and another 3.5mm mic

between A, B and C usually you can tell what is going on.

possible issues? the solutions you have come across are the common problems

-it could be that your onboard audio is very poor and the microphone preamp is horribly weak. in this case a decent soundcard may certainly help. while i'm not sure if its been edited, https/www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CEbb14VTRY at 32 seconds is what a modmic is supposed to sound like. i dont have a modmic myself but i havent heard of there being an issue with low volume levels. likewise, there could be something wrong with your onboard audio.

-realtek software can be buggy. it is quite possible that there is something going on behind the scenes causing issues or an incompatibility with a program somewhere. you can try using the newest drivers but that does not always fix things. using a soundcard or usb soundcard certainly could help if this is the problem.

-while certainly possible there is a problem with the modmic, if it was broken it is most likely to have other symptoms though so i'm hesitant to push the blame there. possible yes but i would test everything else first.

test A, B and C first. or, if you have no issue spending a little money try out a soundcard. even the xonar DG/DGX should work.

I uninstalled the Realtek High Definition Driver and my mic works fine now. It's has a little bit of static interference, but it works! Also is there a way to remove static?

When I play the Mic through my headphones I can hear a bit of static.

is the static from the modmic itself (self noise)? you can check by using other devices (computers) with the modmic to see if you hear it still.

from high gain? sometimes this causes more noise distortion.

or perhaps internal noise from the pc? a soundcard or similar may fix that

or is it an issue with the amp and headphone jack? do you get static in your headphones without using the mic?

I played a little more with the volume sliders and mic boost slider and it helped a lot.
