Ok, this seems obvious. I need updated CODEC drivers ? yes ? but i cannot seem to find ones that work.

I have a 5 year old desk top PC, i7, with upgraded Nvidia 1080 and just bought a DashCam. The dashcam videos it creates is in MOV format (UG!) .. but when i try to see them on my old computer, some are ok but most especially rear camera videos are all black ! .. sound is ok though. Ah! i need upgraded Codec drivers. Searches for such, millions of spam options, decides on Geek site, down loads and installs "Windows 7 Codec pack" .. but no joy, videos still black .. UG! any help ?

BTW, my newer laptop plays all video files ok .. so it must have updated drivers .. but my main work / editing station is my old desktop, I need to run them there.

quicktime was abandoned years ago, it was advised to be removed because it is abandoned and also is a security risk

use a different player is required now, that is why i mention vlc player, which supports many video formats

the klite codec pack could also work but i wouldn't install it if i can use vlc

https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

i have heard complains about some of those codecs being legal or not, so i won't even talk if it is a good or bad idea

vlc is simpler imho

Did you buy cheap memory cards?
You could convert .MOV to .MP4 for example. Virtualdub can do it. I do it. Link: http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ 32-bit is good if you want to use older filters. I use 64-bit.
I also installed codecs so I can encode in x264 so files are smaller, of course that requires downloading a codec. Link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/

Quick tutorial in Vdub. Open .mov file (drag it to Vdub window). Go to Video, make sure you are in 'full processing mode'. Click compression, choose x264vfw. Click configure. Rate control: CRF.
Keep slider between 18 and 23 for good quality.
Tick Vdub hack-box. "OK", "OK".
File-> Save as AVI->type name of file and wait til Vdub has encoded the file.

what video player are you using?

please install vlc and open the mov files with it, mov files requires quicktime and the plugins corresponding, quicktime doesn't exist anymore so vlc might support the files without the codec pack you mention

My TF card is a Samsung 128G Class10, high speed card. Maybe I need a special high speed apple driver ?

I don't want to install anymore Video editing software, I just want to view my files. I tried Windows media player and Firefox to view my videos. They ra e both uptodate.
