So I built my computer about a month ago (Black Friday deals =D) and got the MSI 6950 2GB Twin Frozr on sale, loving the card so far but I'm thinking about trying to unlock to a 6970. I was planning on getting another card once the 7000 series comes out and the price on the card drops some (well I hope it will drop).

I've never OC but I'm sure I can do it without a problem following many guides I've found online, anyways my question is if I can get the card I have now to unlock and when I get my second card (probably in a couple months) if it doesn't unlock will I not be able to CrossFire the cards with one being unlocked and one not? If this is true I assume I would have to flash the original card back to stock then to CrossFire, how much of a pain in the rear would it be to flash it back? Should I wait until I get the second card and try unlocking them both at the same time?

Thanks ahead of time for any advise!

download the bios - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2TGKR4A2
download atiwinflsh - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1967/ATI%20Winflash%202.0.1.14.html

ok now, we only need the 2 files in the 7z file that are r6950pex and origin
put both those files in the folder of ati winflash

so this could be risky , u should prepare to open up your case and flip bios switch.

do this
1)open command prompt with run as admin
2)specify the path in atiwinflash.exe is (eg.C:\atiwinflsh)
3)type in "atiwinflash -unlockrom 0" and enter
4)type in "atiwinflash -p -f 0r6950pex.bin"
5)now reboot
6)wait upto a minute , if u arent able to see anything , not even bios , then open up yr case and flip the bios switch and then when u boot up into windows , flip...

8)if u r successful , then u r good to go , but dont go too much for ocing , i tried ocing but it wont be stable.

and when u get another card , take ur old card and insert new card in the very same pcie , then do the same with it.

both should be flashed or they wont work , and u cant unlock them at the same time.
there should be only 1

^When you say flip bios switch, you should mention that you mean the bios switch on the cards 😛
and not all 6950's switches are bios switches, my Asus' ones have been set to alter the dvi dual/single output instead,
Quick google about hasn't helped though so Lokster1 is going to have to check in his/her manual for that switches purpose,
Good luck with the flash/clock man :)

no i have the same card and it does have the switch .
u must have got the asus 6950 dcu ii , i was also going for that but it dint had a switch so this was the choice

yep the switch on msi r6950 tf3 pe/oc is for bios
u cant change bios 2 in any way cuz thats the backup
u can only change bios 1
so if u mess up with bios , just flip the switch :)

Unfortunately I have had no free time the last couple of weeks, I hope to have some this weekend and give this a go then =D thanks for the replies and I'll let you know what the results are once I try it.
