Multi-PC Folding Info

Just wanted to create a place where people can show off the rigs they have folding. Personally, I have the following PCs folding 24/7:

I have a small farm of P3 machines(about 8 ) that are running P2 and P3 procs 400Mhz - 800Mhz. I don't have any benchmarks for them, I should probably get some scores and update this post later.

I'll soon be adding a P4 @3.0. Also, when I get the cash I want to start setting up a small farm with some cheap P3's or something from eBay. The first 6 and #8 run 24/7 and the others a little less. Man, if I knew this whole folding thing was going to be so addictive I might have stayed away .

Gaming rig: D920 @ 3.6. Run X2 when not playing BF2

Media Center PC: D940 @ 3.6 run it while not watching movies, TV, or kids playing games. Runs X2 the rest of the time

P4 3.0 File server. Ran 2X mutli threaded at first, then decided to run just one job at a time with HT disabled. Runs 24/7

XPS2 Laptop. Finished one job then put it away. Got sick of setting it up just to do jobs.

I'm a little curious to see what the electric bill will come in at. Folding was a good test for the file server. It's always been acting up a bit. After it failed 4 jobs in a row I swapped memory out and it's been chugging along pretty good. I still lose one at random every couple days. I've lost one on each machine by now I'm sure. I think thats fairly normal? The last one I lost had some sort of IO error as it was transmitting the largest job to date....50,000,000 steps. It was like 70 hours of run time. That could have been a couple points. It's cool to be able to maintain stress/work @ 85-95% load on the computers I have built and see them do it well. Fold on TEAM!

BTW....what's this benchmarking thing about? How do I do that?

Awesome tip! Thanks. I was wondering how I would determine what tweaks I might try would yield better results. There wasn't much in the way of directions, but I had it figured out enough to be dangerous in just a few minutes. Thanks again.

You sure would, as long as you're not doing any other demanding tasks on your PC at the time. 2GB is optimal for that combination of options, though.

thanks for the info.... i enabled it and just got one which seems to need "32d13h" i think it's just a bug, but to these large ones take that long...

PS: i don't think i actually got a large one (i'm on modem, i would have noticed the time taken)

edit: the 32d13h fixed to 1d, so it's alright

Providing you have 2GB of RAM, you can use the parameter -advmethod togather with >5MB WU to obtain QMD WUs.
Those give you the highest PPD.

Well I am totaly new to folding but i am curious as to what all that means and how it is done.

Btw I have one folding rig at this point. (however i am going to try to get my brothers amd-3000 and my old dell with a 1.8ghz p4)

i thought that amd's cant do a qmd work unit

AFAIK, this is still accurate. Only Intel machines are processing QMD work units. That being said, there are no new QMD work units floating around out there. The results from the last batch of QMDs are still being processed and analyzed. Hopefully, they'll get that bug worked out before the next batch of QMDs is released.

I've got three computers going on FAH for now. I hope to add a fourth when money is available.

1. PD820 w/2GB (HTPC for now, to become office PC when better HTPC parts come)
2. Core Duo@1.66GHz w/1GB (girlfriend's laptop)
3. Pentium-M@1.3GHz w/1GB (own laptop)

I run the 64-bit linux SMP client on the PD820, and I've been getting about 800ppd on it. Recently I switched the Core Duo to the Windows SMP, and it'll be interesting to see how well that performs. The old Pentium-M gets about 40-50 ppd.
