My computer (HP) goes completely black after log in... How do I fix this?

Solution
Couple of things to check.

Simple one is to hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE after you get the blackscreen. Open task manager. Select run new task. type in explorer.exe and click OK. This may get you to the desktop as a temporary solution.

If you have multiple monitors, unplug all but one. Then start moving the monitor to the various outputs. Occasionally Windows will put the desktop on the wrong screen (Thought they had fixed all that)

Boot windows into safe mode by pressing F8 at startup. See if it boots normally.

Your video drivers could be causing the issue. Microsoft occasionally sends out video drivers via Windows udpates. You can try uninstalling them from safe mode, then rebooting.

Another common issue is anti-virus software not working...

Another common issue is anti-virus software not working correctly. Uninstall or remove these from safe mode and give it another go.

A specific one for HP Laptops:

1) UNPLUG THE LAPTOP
2) REMOVE THE BATTERY
3) HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS TO 2 MINUTES
4) THEN PUT THE BATTERY BACK IN
5) START IT UP..
