Need boot disc?

After an update my laptop started with the blue screen stating a require device is not connected or can't be accessed" and states that I will need the recovery tools on the installation disc which I do not recall receiving discs...however that issue seems to have progressed and now it starts up and goes directly to dos and says "media test failure, check cable" then says "exiting PXE ROM, no bootable device,insert boot disc and press any key". What does this all mean, what caused it and where do I get a boot disc.

What Windows version is installed?
What model is your laptop?

It all means that there's something severely wrong with your hard drive, it is yet to be determined if it is only a software problem where a reinstall could resolve the problem or if it is a hardware problem where you need to replace the hard drive.

PS, reinstalling the OS and replacing the hard drive is not meant as a solution, it's only an example to clarify what I mean
