I am trying to decide between 2 computers

a) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232357

b) http://www.amazon.com/F555UA-EH71-Intel-Laptop-Windows-64bit/dp/B014LE6A6I/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8

I am looking for a computer to handle moderate gaming, and lots of multitasking without lag or latency, while not sacrificing too much portability. I understand that "a" is speced better, but my question is about the processors. The processor in "a" is a quad core, 4th gen i7, while the processor in "b" is a dual core 6th gen i7. My question is, despite being faster, will the 4th gen processor remain relevant into the foreseeable future, or would I be better off going with the dual core, simply because it is newer.

Solution

Get the first machine! It's far more powerful and has much better graphics (essential for gaming).

Software is using *more cores* rather than less so the quad core is a real bonus (note both current consoles have 8 cpu cores, which the i7 essentially matches being 4 core / 8 threads).

The main advantage of the second machine is it will be more portable and have better battery life, although when gaming on a laptop you're usually best to plug it in anyways.

Solution

Would the second machine do ok with gaming, even with the integrated graphics? Gaming is not my primary concern,it is a close second to multitasking. I like the first machine better for sure, but I am just concerned that I am sacrificing portability to gain specs that I may not use.

For both multitasking and gaming the first machine will be superior, with the only thing the second machine might offer is better battery life due to a newer processor that uses lower power, at the expense of speed.
