Need help converting lan only Sony DVD player to Wi-Fi

I just bought a refurbished Sony Blu Ray DVD and steaming unit BDP-BX 1700, it is LAN connection only and my router is down stairs.I was wondering if I could use a cheaper non Sony wireless Wi-Fi adapter to connect to my router down stairs?

You need a "wireless bridge" sometimes called a "gaming adapter". Some routers can work as a wireless bridge or you can buy dedicated hardware.
