Need help not recognizing 7.1 surround on Razer Tiamat 7.1 headset? An optimal settings?

My new Razer tiamat headset isn't being recognized as 7.1 when I go into my window sound settings. Supposedly my motherboard has 8 channels of audio, I thought that meant 7.1 surround sound.

Also the headset sounds pretty good so far, but I heard it sounds bad out of the box without optimal settings, so does anyone want to share theirs?

MB ASROCK Z77 EXTREME6 Z77 is the mobo. But it's ok I'm taking them back anyways...way too uncomfortable for the price, I do have a question tho do i need a 3.5mm headset to get good sound out of a soundcard or will a usb work? The soundcard in question is the Creative Sound Blaster Z, and the headset I'm not sure of yet.

I don't have any personal experience using USB headphones because I researched that before I bought my TurtleBeach EarForceHPA-2 5.1 headphones, that uses discrete drivers. In reviews that I had read people preferred 3.5 over USB. Also, since you have a sound card I would definitely use 3.5.
