Not a required update, just update the required IOS's and run the games with out the update partition.... Problem = No problem!
As for removing physical media to combat piracy.. good luck with that. The Wii VC stuff is actually easy to pirate if you know what your doing, and on the PC side of things I don't use any disks even on the games I own let alone if I pirated something (who wants to burn a disk when you don't need too?)
