I have recently noticed that some Laptops are being sold now

*Without CD/DVD for a slim and lightweight laptop.

I had to re-install windows 7 on my Acer sometime back

which was easy with the CD/DVD .So whats the point of not
having this facility anymore is it a disadvantage to a Novice
who is purchasing a new Laptop?
Would like to hear any opinions please Thanks

Times are changing.
You can now install windows using an external USB powered dvd or even with a USB stick.

Some older games may require a cd but there are usually some options to get around that.

One could always buy an older laptop with dvd used. Installing a ssd will bring it's performance past some newer units with only a hard drive.

The CD-DVD drive takes up A LOT of space that could be used for something else such as the battery, especially if the laptop is a slim one. Not to mention many people no long have a need for a CD-DVD drive since almost everything can be found online. Also, should one actually require a drive, one can find external drives that plug into the USB ports:

Solution
You've got people that install their OS and perform repairs just by burning an iso to a bootable usb using Rufus. Honestly, CDs are more reliable because you wouldn't need to tweak the bios settings as much as you would to troubleshoot bootable usb problems.
