No sound from external speakers via second screen

My laptop is connected to a Philips monitor via an HDMI cable. I am trying to connect Bose external speakers. I get sound if the speakers are connected only to the laptop(via the headphones port).
However, if I connect the laptop to the monitor, I get no sound from the external speakers. This happens irrespective of whether the speakers are plugged into the laptop or into the audio port of the monitor.
Help please- but bear in mind that my knowledge of computers is very basic indeed...

The default audio is on the HDMI port, change it to the onboard audio chip.

Righ-click on the speaker icon in the system tray by the clock and select the right playback device.
