Non-TIVO DVR

I like the Tivo capabilities, but I don't want to pay the monthly fee
or the large upfront fee. Does anyone make a non-Tivo DVR without the
monthly fee? It's no important to me to have the programming schedule
included. I can tell it which channel and time to record.

Thanks!

Um, what specific capabilities do you like then?

Can't you buy tv tuner cards for the PC that will do this sort of
thing? They might be as much as 60-80 $ though. How about an
inexpensive VCR? Those can be had for 30-40 $.

Let us know when you're caught up on the messages here.

Heck, don't even have to read them all, just the past week's worth will
answer your question several times over.

As, for that matter, a google search would...which one must assume you are
familiar with since you posted from google groups.

In other words, a quick look at this group would have shown you that
any post that calls into question the wisdom of paying through the
nose month after month for a TIVO subscription, like these bozos do,
is only an invitation for flames. So put on your asbestos suit.

Wow, another Sean!? or wait, could he be the same person? Who else
hangs out in a group that supports a product he doesn't like and posts
into virtually every thread?

I would suggest to the OP that a Tivo group is probably not the best
place to investigate non-tivo DVRs. However, there are plenty out
there, as someone else noted, just use google, or cruise into your local
Circuit City or BestBuy. You shouldn't have any trouble finding one.
You won't find a lot of recommendations about them here, the vast
majority of posters like the value added service provided by Tivo and
don't use non-Tivo boxes. I do know that a few posters use some for
archiving (though that use has dropped since Tivo-to-go was released).

I believe it's the most important question one could ask in order to give
the OP the best advice possible.

Well, that might be the best alternative out there, depending on what the
OP values. More input is really needed though.

Some TiVo units come with TiVo Basic which requires no purchase of
subscription. You then have the option of purchasing the subscription for
the more advanced features.

One non-TiVo recorder I know a lot of people are saying good things about is
the Liteon DVD recorder. Also a few days ago it was posted, I forget who,
about a DVD recorder under $100.

I think RCA makes a hard drive based non-TiVo recorder, but I don't know
much about it other than it exists.

There's probably at least 10 different models. Walmart even has one. I've
got an RCA. My brother has a panasonic he likes. There's models with Tivo
basic if you have a land line, etc.etc.

Best bet is a series one Tivo. I have two Phillips myself hacked for much
more storage and file transfer. They have been very reliable. Plus if you
like hacking stuff, you won't find much that's better. They can be found on
ebay for less than $100.
You may even want to try the full service just to see if you like it or not.
Any one you activate past the first one is just $7, so the more you have,
the more reasonable the service becomes.
When I bought my first one 5 years ago, I had issues with the cost as well.
Didn't activate my first one till I bought an SD-H400 (with Tivo Basic) and
had to for the $100 rebate, and now I have 3 series 2's with full service
and 2 series 1's without.
So even if you don't activate your series 1, it will make a great, cheap
dvr.

Your cable co will give you one for free. It does cost about $10
per month tho.

But you don't own a Mercedes. If you did you would probably participate in
the group. I assume Sean owns a Tivo, and like me, doesn't like some of
the feaures, or lack of features, or the Tivo subscription policy.

And yes, I own a Tivo. It's a series 1 that doesn't require a sub. It
works fine but there's still lots of things I don't like about it. I also
own an RCA PVR. It also works well, but there's things about it I like and
don't like. Today, with all the altenatives, I wouldn't buy a Tivo. I also
wouldn't buy the same model of RCA, but I would buy a newer model.

There's one thing that is certain though. There are lots of bias people in
this group that has the attitude that Tivo can do no wrong and is the
greatest thing since sliced bread. maybe so, til you get hungry.

No, the difference is you seem to be willing to consider pros and cons.
There's no problem with disagreeing or subjectively considering one
product over another, I think you'll find that this group encourages,
not discourages that. What is *discouraged* is blind criticism of
nearly every thread, and telling everyone that they are idiots for
paying for a product they prefer. There's a difference, and certain
posters are definitely in the latter area.

Well, that's great. You have reached a legitimate opinion, even though
many folks on this group may disagree with. That doesn't make you
wrong, and nobody should do anything but respectfully disagree with you
(or agree, as the case may be). In the long run I would expect that
you'd replace your Series 1 with something you clearly like better, and
then probably lose interest in this group since it doesn't really
address your interests. Unless you had some sort of personal ax to
grind, or you like to flamebait.

> There's one thing that is certain though. There are lots of bias people in

I would have to heartily disagree with you. Honest debate is encouraged
here, it's what makes it interesting. It's presenting a point or
argument without using logic or facts that's disliked.

I think we can agree that the facts are that many non-Tivo DVR's have
superior hardware features compared to the current SA Tivos. I think we
can also agree that *most* people think the Tivo software is far better
than the non-Tivo DVR's (despite what 1 poster may continuously assert).
Which is more important? That's subjective and up to the end-user.
But it's certainly open for debate!

I'm sure that your presentation -- although possibly in
disagreement with some who are Tivo fans -- would be a reasonable
one. It wouldn't be intentionally inflammatory as some seem to
be. My beef isn't with disagreeing opinions, it's with those who
seem to have noting good to say about Tivo AND more importantly,
seem to delight in insulting anyone who does like them.

What you seem to be missing is that many of us are not paying ANYTHING
continuously for our Tivo subscription.

If given the choice, I would always pay a one-time fee rather than a
continuing fee.

Even with the $6.95 multiple Tivo discount price, I am almost positive I
would pay the lifetime price. It has already paid for itself long ago when
compared to the monthly fee. (I paid lifetime on my first Tivo. The news
that the lifetime fee was going to go up was what got me to get my butt in
gear several years ago to actually get a Tivo, but I actually ended up
getting it after the price had gone up. The 2nd Tivo also has lifetime,
but I lucked out on ebay. I purposely bought a broken one on eBay since it
sounded like a bad hard drive. I intended to use it without a subscription,
but it ended up having lifetime. In the future, I wouldn't buy a Tivo
to use without subscription and would buy something else if it fit my
needs better -- which is why I also have a non-Tivo hard drive/DVD recorder,
since I can edit recordings on it, and can't on the Tivo/DVD recorders..
But if I _could_ edit on them, I would've paid for the far better Tivo UI.)

Since you can't get lifetime on DirecTV Tivos anymore, I'd obviously pay the
monthly fee there.. but when given a choice, I try not to go monthly.

Also, I forgot to say one thing.. though not directly related, I have
thought about upgrading to S2s via the "get refurb 40 hour for free
for price of lifetime subscription". I guess I should check ebay prices to
see if s1s still go for around their original hardware price. Even though
my Tivos are right next to each other, sometimes I've wanted to move shows
from one to the other for space reasons (even on my expanded tivos, sometimes
I watch much more on one than the other). I'd be much more inclined to
if cooperative scheduling ever comes out.
