Hi,

I've had Palms for years and just bought my first PocketPC device, the
Asus 730W. It crashes (freezes up and requires a soft reset) several
times a day. My question, perhaps a silly one, is this normal
behavior for a PocketPC (Windows) handheld? Or do you think my unit
is defective?

I did a hard reset as well to see if it was one of my applications
causing the problem but it still happens...

Nigel,

The short answer is no, this should not be happening.

Your test method is a good one and should help determine if it is indeed an
application causing the problem or a hardware issue.

I rarely ever HAVE to reset. But I'm constantly trying different utilities
and programs, so I usually reset just to refresh the system from TSR's etc.

I have owned a number of PocketPC's (HP and Dell) and I always have to reset
them. It happens so often that I have a shortcut for a reset program.

I found that trying lots of programs - installing and uninstalling-
when I first got my ppc caused freezes, but once settled the lockups
became less common.

How about a ROM update?

Make sure you backup your data and do a hard reset before applying a ROM
update.

Thank you all for your advice and comments. I do have the current ROM
update. Today I will play solitaire till my eyes drop out and if it
crashes again I'll return it.

ditto for me... axim X30 624 and on a Toshiba 755e

used to have a palm smart phone, never crashed, not once in 4 years, I still
use it from time to time.

easy explanation= MICROSOFT. they have not made an OS yet that can't be
crashed by some careless programmer (and my expertise at installing those
poor software apps...)

Before Win ME I used to use Norton's crash protector program (forgot the
proper name, made by Symantec) and it worked like a charm, on both win '95
and win '98 (1st and second edition) It was able to stop 80% of all my
system crashes in time to keep my pc from locking (although 60% of the time
when it did work, the crash protector program would crash shortly after and
I'd have to reboot to get it to reload anyways), maybe they should release a
version for ppc 2003 SE?

I think I was the only idiot with a win '98 machine running a K6 processor
with 256megs of ram that constantly had 20 to 60 web pages open...

I too just bought an ASUS A730W, I've had for about 2-3 weeks now. I
have not experienced any crashes, freezes, or had to do any soft resets
since I've had the device. It's working perfectly for me.

Don't beat up on Microsoft. There isn't an O/S anywhere that a careless
programmer with ring-0 permission can't crash. Only Linux zealouts will
[try] to tell you otherwise. I've developed system and applications level
code for 25 years and, believe me - the totally bullet-proof O/S simply does
not exist. Tell you what, though - I've seen Windows go from a curiosity
(version 1.01 back in '86 or so) to XP. An environment with a more rich set
of tools you'll not find. To expect "perfection" out of something this
complex is simply unreasonable. However, M$ certainly got it right with the
latest, IMHO.

As for PPC - I've seen it mature as well. Runs very stable, particularly
considering the programming load it takes. Beats the hell out of Palm.

You might have hit the proverbial nail on the head. I believe that the
programmers today do not always test their code very well. And all of
that fancy "visual" stuff removes them too much from the computer. All
programmers should do a least one semester of assembly.

Yes! Too many developers are too far removed from the yardware, to the
point that software that works okay under specific test conditions falls
completely apart under even slightly taxed hardware. Assembler will make
you appreciate all those register hoops.

have you turned it on? or is it a perfect paper weight?

how about installing any apps? it has been quite well recommended (although
not entirely always necessary) to soft reset after installing new apps. (or
uninstalling and before uninstalling)

I've had to do normal soft resets after installing some software, but
I've not had to soft reset because of any problems with the unit.
