nvidia graphics card go haywire..!!

i have an nvidia geforce gt 820m. i was trying to update it when it said NVIDIA INSTALLER FAILED. ( the latest update 350. something)
any hints on what might have happened?? and how could i continue??
My antiviruses were off, and i downloaded the update manually. could any one resolve this? thanks for the help
UPDATE:
for the first time, when this installer failed, it had wiped off the previous version of the driver too!!! this is no good. I don't have any viruses in my laptop.

dell inspiron 3000 series ( 3542)
4 gigs ram
windows 8.1 64 bit
nvidia geforce gt 820 m

For Dell laptops you must only use drivers from Dell's website. Is that where you downloaded the driver from?

Well, don't think you need driver from Dell website. Try to fully uninstall all the Nvidia software (start with uninstalling current driver with checking checkbox "Delete the driver software for this device")
