[citation][nom]Silmarunya[/nom]Please reconsider 'your experience' then. I was 16 not very long ago and I could spell as well as I can today back then, if not better. I was perfectly able to do elementary calculus without calculators and I didn't need multicolor maps of everything. And that's not just me, it applies to virtually everybody I know/knew. Either American secondary education is a mess, or you know the wrong type of teenagers...[/citation]

Point taken; however my experience with my step children happens to be typical of the educational system of today (in Minnesota at least), while a friend's younger children were required to check out a play station from school in order to do homework. Sorry, that makes me sick and worrisome of the ability of kids to problem solve or even think critically by the time they are ready to run things.

You are indeed educated and I acknowledge the fact that many young people know much more than we did at their age, however I feel that we(the majority are headed towards a future very similar to the one portrayed in the movie "Idocracy"

All this said, you make a good point :) !

[citation][nom]zak_mckraken[/nom]I knew americans where known for their "government/big brother" paranoïa, but I wasn't expecting so much from tech savvy readers. So far, 9/10 people seem they would rather live under a rock.[/citation]
I don't think they are really that tech savvy, I've been checking out the comments for the past couple of months and most don't seem to know jack about technology. Seems to mostly just be a bunch of kids that think they are a tech expert because they know how to install a video card or add some memory.

"We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities."
...Does anybody else think that this is just a "chip-away" that will eventually lead to utter control??? lol

[citation][nom]Silmarunya[/nom]No, not really. These devices don't replace traditional security measures, they simply add another layer on top of it. One that doesn't contain any personal data other than a few minor ones the government already knows anyway (like date of birth and area of residence), does not stock passwords or does not in any other way pose a security risk. Instead, it's an extra layer of verification that can make many services a lot safer.[/citation]

Actually no, it even says it stocks passwords:
"What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities.

[citation][nom]Silmarunya[/nom]Call it socialism if you have to, but keep in mind that:- Europe, on average, does better economically than the US, despite lacking natural resources and other stable sources of revenue.- Poverty levels in Europe are far lower than in the US- The US places a lot of limits on personal freedoms that Europe does not (the right to marry a person of choice, even if he/she shares your gender for example, or the right not to be held without proof even if you are an alleged terrorist).- Our education system ranks consistently higher in rankings.- Crime rates are lower- The influence of large corporations on government matters is far smaller- More is being done to protect the environment in Europe than in the US.[/citation]

True if you look at Europe as a whole but look at each country and:

- No single European Country or any country for that matter has a higher GDP than the US. Sure combine all of Asia or all of Europe and it probably will.
- Overall probably. I would hope that a country that controls most of everything would have lower poverty/unemployment rates. If they had higher it would just be the fall of the USSR again.
- Everyone is different about marriage. Some say one way, others say another way. And in most cases, you cannot be held without some sort of crime. If there is no crime or proof of that crime police can't hold you. Terrorism is another thing.
- Yes the education system is higher. Then again the government controls it. Here its not as regulated and personally I think the Government should focus on that. But its not to say you cannot succeed in it. I did fairly well considering we had over crowded classrooms and under paid teachers.
- Crime is relative. There are still large influences of gangs all over Europe that control the police and localized governments. That alone could easily make crime rates seem lower. Happens everywhere though, not just Europe. Its a world thing that darn organized crime.
- While Europe may be pushing ahead in environment and civil rights, all of it really started in the US. And honestly some of the best things start here. In China alone they still don't follow the same regulations as here and its because its cheaper for the company. It will come in time but still overall, the US is pretty good in terms of environmental friendliness.

I for one can't see Socialism working in the US. The people are not the same. Its worked somewhat in Europe but I always look at something like the EU and think. Its basically a milder version of the USSR. But in the end it will probably fail. And when it does, those smaller countries that do not have a good GDP or anything to really make them money will fall the hardest, much like the smaller countries of the USSR did. Its actually happening right now. Greece alone shows that. Greece has nothing really and needed a major bailout that if they didn't get would have probably started the collapse of the EU.

But still this is crap. The internet needs no governmental regulation beyond speed. I would be fine if the government pushed to get high speed internet everywhere as well as pushed to improve it. But to have anything that they could jump in and take info fro, and trust me they would be able to do it with this, is pure BS.

I understand the military (my wife is in the Air Force and needs a Smart Card for her work) or government using them as a security measure to access very classified servers. The cards have login info and certificate info. But beyond that there is no reason why the consumer market needs it.

Its like taxing the internet. Its pure BS. Much like the current tax system that was never meant to last but was a emergency decision to help lift the US out of the Great Depression. But the government kept it in place and probably will until the citizens finally figure that out. Problem is that most youth are not into politics and I can't blame them. Its all just a bunch of back and forth BS anyways.

Always get worked up when Americans claim that in Europe they are 'used to having their civil liberties taken away', as they are basically socialist (communist, marxist, etc.) governments. I would love to hear about a few of those liberties. I currently live in the US and am constantly baffled by the number of things that are taken completely for granted seems complete anathema to a European. E.g. drinking age < conscription age, Political correctness vs. political reality, rampant and constant filibustering, opposition to a public health plan. If you think you live in the freest country on earth, please do yourselves a favor and spend some time abroad.

I always have to remind myself that our cultures have a very different history. Evaluation and criticism of ones own culture compared to someone else's can be very hard. That definitely goes both ways.

Oh yes, this is exactly what we need, another way for bureaucrats and politicians to track and keep an eye on us. Especially those that may disagree with them. I'm sure though, that they would use it responsibly and not nefariously.

No thanks. I can do without another layer of tracking what I do on the internet. And I'll die before I sign up for some government controlled internet ID that contains all my passwords.

Yea sounds like a new and easier way for identity theft and for them to keep tabs what you do online. no thanks.

Scare tactics seem extremely potent to control you pitiful simple minds. Glenn Beck must be wacking off to you people's comments by now...

Considering your country has some of the best schooling available it's almost unbelievable that so many of you are so retarded.

"A unique ID which would contain information about my home address, my phone number, my email, my name? Oh god never! My info could get stolen! Now let me just go update my Facebook page, grab a few keyloggers while following some "funny" links my friends sent me, then go on ebay and fill out my address and credit card info to purchase crap I don't even need."

You're pathetic, you moved 1 step forward electing someone who doesn't talk to you like children about the bad, evil people that want to hurt you all the time, but moved 3 steps back just watching Fox news and believing them.

This American wants Obama out of office along with his whole free-loading staff.

Did you know only 8% of his staff ever held a real job?

wow, just because its the government talking you are already throwing this idea out the airlock, i am willing to hear these guys out.
i, personally hate the internet as it exists today, a wild west where nobody knows who you are, no consequences and anything goes. scams, viruses, its a hell hole.
