Panasonic NV-GS250: Problems downloading video to PC

G'day,

I have a Panasonic NV-GS250 MiniDV video camera. Over the years I've captured some 25 hours of raw video, which I now want to transfer to my PC.

The software supplied by Panasonic is however not helpful in this respect. I gather from browsing on the internet that it is widely considered to be utter crap so I appear not to be the only one with this experience.

Is there any freeware that will help me import the raw video to my PC? I don't want an editing software but rather just something that helps me get the material onboard in some convenient format.

Are the movies on a memory card? if they are you can transfer them directly

I'm afraid not, they're all on MiniDV tapes so I need to find a way of transferring them from this format to the computer.
