If the fan isn't working, then your system is probably overheating and locking up. Hence the screen stops responding. That's a pretty simple and basic problem. If your fan isn't working, it needs to be fixed. If it's is indeed overheating and locking up. That is your problem. The only way to know for sure is to put a monitor on it and track the temperature. That is if it can run long enough for you to do that.

Now if that is NOT the problem, then there are other options. Like sleep methods, hibernation, etc. that you can change. Personally I don't like sleep. I turn it off and use hibernation, especially in XP if it's that old. I don't know the ACER systems. Never used em. But looking over the specs, it seems it had Win 7 at least. Get new drivers first. They will likely be legacy drivers but get them from AMD directly.

Those are your first steps...

Also, have you tried a quick tap on the power button when opening the laptop to tell it to power back up? It is old... If so configured, just opening it might not do the trick. You might need to actually hit the power button or the keyboard somehow to get it to restart.

You have to check with the manufacturer what the color of the bulb means.

But why it's not working, I suspect is a problem with it's sleep modes. You might try turning it off and for a while try using Hibernate instead.
