we have a DTivo and a couple weeks ago we were having problems w/ poor
signal on one of the lines. calling directv was of no use. their
"problem solving" said that the problem was bad cable not allowing a
signal thru.

of course, this was BS as i freaking installed the cable and it was
perfect. i was able to swap cables that proved that the cabling in the
room was not the problem.

so i went outside and saw that there was a bunch of snow pooled in the
dish, so we just went out on the roof (do this at your own risk) and
brushed the snow out of the dish...VOILA! full strength signal.

We have a two-story house. I built a pole and duct-taped a whiskbroom
to the end, at 90 degrees to the pole. Works great, and I get to stay
on the ground during bad weather.

I've had that thing you mention where some stations are LOS but others
aren't. It has to do with uneven accumulation of snow on the dish.
The dish will take an impressive amount of snow and ice before losing
the signal.

They actually make heaters to prevent just this sort of problem. They
generally attach to the back side of the dish and warm it up enough to
prevent snow and ice from collecting on it.

I've a friend in Colorado that lives at 8,500 ft. He refers to it as
his "Giant Q-Tip". One of those telescoping poles used for changing
light bulbs that are way high can be adapted to make a very
professional looking device.

Walking on the roof when there is snow and ice is not something to
not take without extreme caution lest you fall and knock the dish out
of allignment. You might also be hurt.

Yes DTV customer service is pitiful. Luckily I have Comcast.

Although we all know the "snow picture problem" is a myth so stop
posting such BS here.

And I should say, if your not really technical savvy, I can
kinda see where a person wouldn't think of looking at the dish.........

Didn't want to diss the feller too bad, and it's good he got his problem
solved. ;-)
