[citation][nom]ProDigit80[/nom]Same happens with notebooks that are set to sleep in XP.Upon getting out of sleep, the computer continues to use the old IP address, even if the router has already assigned the IP to another.Windows Vista and 7 make the user know, that there's another user using this IP address. It's not something new...[/citation]

Shenanigans.

The router will only give out the IP if the previous lease has expired. Windows will request an IP when the lease expires and if it expires while asleep it will request when it wakes up. If the previous IP is in use when this request happens then a different one is issued.

XP also alerts users to a duplicate IP just like Vista/Win7. It's nothing more than a gratuitous ARP that is standard in any TCP/IP stack that I've come across.

This IS a new problem described in the article. DHCP is as old as dirt and not exactly a hard protocol to implement on the client side. Apple has their heads up their butt on this one if they can't even handle a NACK.

If the iPad has been banned from the holy land of all places, what would jesus say if you had one? Ans: Repent you apple whore, or you're going to hell... ROTFLMAOH!

[citation][nom]hellwig[/nom]I'm pretty sure Windows XP also alerts the user that the IP is already in use, and disable the network interface until something is resolved. Windows also does NOT continue to broadcast on that IP address, whereas apparently the iPad does.It may not be the norm, but if its in the protocol, the iPad should support it.[/citation]
Well, I happen to run Win XP MCE and it happened to be the case that unless I refresh the connection, I can share an IP address with someone else.
I don't know where you get this garbage theory, but my laptop is living proof that it clearly DOES NOT do what you say.
And I've also NEVER seen any popup saying that another laptop is using the same IP address on my computer, while on my wife's I do see the popup.

It also depends on router. I'm not saying my laptop will act in the same manner with a router that changes IP every so many minutes; my issue is purely out of a regular linksys or netgear homerouter you can use the old IP when coming out of sleep, even if the router has addressed the IP to a new computer

Although I doubt Jesus was any more than a mortal man, if Christian teaching tells you anything it's that what you think he'd have said is the antithesis of Christian thinking.

THW is littered with illiterate, ill-eductated children.

This nonsense should have accompanied my comment above.

Sounds like a router problem. If the lease expiration has not yet occurred it is illegal per RFC to re-issue that same IP. If the lease HAS expired then the client does a full DORA process all over (instead of just an "RA" at the 1/2 lease points to try and get the same IP).

Furthermore if you're not getting notified of an IP conflict then gratutitous ARPs are failing somewhere. A network capture would answer a lot of questions for you.

I'm not saying you don't have a problem. I'm saying it's not due to your Windows client. DHCP client implementation is just not all that hard. Apple has no excute for screwing it up.

How the hell can you mess up a DHCP client on a wireless device? I mean that stuff is documented to the letter by the IEEE.

Sounds like they spent too much time airbrushing fancy icons and coming up with songs to use for their commercials.
