We are now happy owners of Tivo. Problem is we are moving back to town
and will not have a Dish any more (Condo). Can the replay TV work on all
systems meaning cable. We call our future cable company and they have
"never heard of Replay TV" and just keep saying "Tivo no you can not use
Tivo" and we try to explain to them that it is not Tivo its Replay TV

This really shouldn't be an issue. Your cable box is sending a video
signal out to your TV via coax or s-video cable. The outbound signal
can just as easily be connected to the input of your TiVo/Replay. The
key is being able to control the cable box channel setting from your
TiVo/Replay. In the case of the RTV 5xxx series, you get a small cable
with an IR transmitter on the end that sits over the Cable box's remote
control receiver window (usually in the front panel). You then
configure the IR cable by specifying the manufacturer and model of the
cable box from a menu, or manually testing various presets. You also
select from a list of local cable/satellite providers (RTV/TiVo knows
who they are; that's why you're paying them for the channel guide). Once
you have the equipment configured, everytime your device is set to
record, it send an IR signal to the cable box to change the channel to
the one you're recording.

Replay is independent of the source, but in order to get the most
benefit from it, Replay needs to have program listings available for you.
You should be able to call Replay and find out if the listings for your
cable company are currently available. I expect it is.

Frankly I would do a little more research on Tivo. I suspect you can
use Tivo on their system.

The possible problem with either may be that your cable company is
sending the signal in such a manor (digital?) that neither Tivo or Replay
will be able to directly read the signal until after it comes from the cable
converter box. Replay does have the ability to control the cable box via
the IR control. So it should work, unless they are using some sort of
strange remote.

ReplayTV will work with the cable system. The minimum wage agent you
spoke to is only trained to sel you the cable box PVR and has probably
never heard of RTV.
