did you type the command before that, the one that unlocks the rom, if it's read only?

Oh, you may also need to change your bios switch to the writable version.

This is due to you hiding "known file extensions". You'll need to go to your folder options, go to the view tab and uncheck the "hide known file extensions". Then you can actually rename the file to .bin.

Another alternative, is to save your bios from "GPU-Z", which will save it in a .bin format.

That would mean that your shaders are not functioning. They may have lasered off the additional shaders, or they just don't function correctly. The limit to OC limits is actually more useful than the shaders are, all in all.

I've never overvolted my GPU. I just play them at 885/1375 clocks. My twin frozr can go much higher, but my reference card gets a little unstable over 900.

Correct. Actually, my TF2 can go beyond 920/1375 (I never tried higher due to my 2nd card being slower).

I grabbed the last remaining reference MSI(dual bios, stock cooler) from Newegg.

After just unlocking the shaders, my computer freezes. I can't virtually do anything as it locks up whenever I start an internet or any programs.

I flashed my bios back to the original. Do you have any ideas what is causing this? I RMAed my 6870 back to Newegg which costed me $50 in addition to restocking fee due to Canadian Post's strike. I didn't even OC. If shader unlocking doesn't work, I'm gonna cry :(

It does sound as if you got one that did not have fully functional shaders. You were able to unlock it, which was good, but not all 6950's had fully functional shaders.

You could try using the directions matto17sec's posted, but you'll likely have the same issue.

When I first unlocked it without any drivers, I didn't have any freezing problem but GPU-Z showed only half of unlocked shaders. After installing the newest ATI driver catalyst, it started freezing here and there, unfreezes saying "Catalyst was restrated due to an error" than re-freezes again in 10 seconds.

Do you think it is still my card's problem? Thanks!

It may be worth exploring a driver problem, but I doubt you'll find a solution. Normally when you unlock the shaders, you don't have to change the drivers, it just starts using them without problem.
