Realplayer streaming.... again...

Well, this topic has been brought up again and again in general - but
here is a specific question....

I'm using a Netgear wireless router... I used to be able to stream
Realaudio from the web without any problem...

Now, I got a D-Link VoIP box connected to the Internet and then the
Netgear router connected to it... I can stream Windows Media - but not
Realaudio...

I thought that it was a double NAT problem... I turned off DHCP on the
W-Router and gave the W-Router an IP in the same subnet as the VoIP
box (but above it's DHCP range)...and connected the two via LAN ports
with a crossover cable. The W-router should now be acting as a plain
switch...

I even turned off the 'automatically connect to Internet' and the
firewall... still nothing... (After allowing the PocketPC to
get VoIP box's DHCP server info...

So, now I'm at the conclusion that it wasn't the double NAT/DHCP...
but it's the D-Link VoIP box which isn't allowing the RealAudio to
play... I hear that different people have differnet luck with
different routers... Anyone have any idea if there is a setting I
could change on the VoIP box to allow the Realaudio through?
RealPlayer gets to the "Loading" stage and then times out...

Can you give you link so others can try it. I've never had a nat streaming
problem with real on the ppc and I've used a few different routers.

I've tried a few URLs with the same results. Others have posted that
there's a 'known issue with NAT' and the PPC RealAudio... but I know
that it works with my Netgear W-router. I emailed D-link and Real...
I'll see if they come up with it...

Anyhow, I don't want to post the URLs here, as I don't know if virii
will pick up the addresses... Can I email directly? Do I just remove
the "nospam?"

Thanks

Yes that'll be fine, just remove the nospam.

Now that I know it works for you -- as well as it works for me if I
just have the Netgear router.... where do we go from here?

Thanks

That's a good question, I'm not sure why it's not working for you and works
for me. Which version of realplayer are you using 1.0 or 1.1? I did my
tests on 1.1

The first response to my email to Real (a 3rd party replies) was:

"Thank you for contacting RealNetworks Technical Support.

From your mail I understand that you are experiencing trouble while
streaming clips using RealPlayer.

Kindly note that RealPlayer uses UDP, TCP/IP ports and http, ports.
RealPlayer cannot stream if these ports are blocked.

In order configure the Netgear router kindly contact Netgear Technical
support."

I replied, re-stating that it works with RealPlayer on the PC,
but not on the PPC. I then asked if knowing that fact would
help narrow down what the issue is. FYI - I looked at the port that my
PC was using (incoming) and then did a single port scan from my PPC.
It said that the port is open.

I also tried fiddling with MTU settings on the PPC (I don't see any
settings on the VoIP router.. I see that the W-Router had 1500) to no
avail.

I tried 'port forwarding' on the port that was being used with the
PC RealPlayer.. but if that was the issue, it wouldn't work on the
PC either. I can't do ranges of port forwarding - so I did a few ports
in the RealPlayer range, to no avail.... Unless the PPC version
specifies different ports than the PC version, it can't be a port
blocking issue.
I don't know who requests the port with RealPlayer.

I see old threads were people just gave up... It's annoying that,
all other things the same, one router works another doesn't...
I looked at Ethernet tracing on the VoIP router... nothing that struck
me..

Eric,
Is there a program - for the PPC- which can display which ports are
currently in use? On my PC, I can see which ports RealPlayer is using
via my firewall software... I'd like to see -- on a WORKING PPC
connection, which ports are being used, so that I can try to do port
forwarding for those ports with the 'bad' router.

If you don't mind, could you try it on your side?

Thanks!

OK... Good news and bad news...

I installed a packet sniffer on my PPC and ran the same RealAudio
stream from both the good router and bad router... and then
compared notes....

Most of the control is done in TCP - with ports that seem to be
open... A few UDP packets.. also go through.
The setup 'text' looks the same (besides some 'unique key' type
fields).

Everything is good... until a couple of packets after the one which
contains the following:
Transport: x-real-rdt/udp;client_port=27996;server_port=22120

That is the client<>server mapping for the audio itself.

A packet gets sent out of my PPC at port 27996 and no response
from 22120... I tried doing a port scan of the port... no response.

I see a few retries and then a "TEARDOWN" message (it's given up
trying).

So, it seems that the router is blocking that port... Well,
I run a few more tests, to the same website... The port
changes each time... seems to always be in the 2xxxx range when
I tried.

(Again, all this is ok on Netgear, blocked by D-Link)

I still don't get why the PC version works fine... I think I'll
have to run a packet sniffer there and see what range ports I get
there.

Anyhow, the PocketPC client does advertise itself
as being pocketpc to the server, so it is CONCEIVABLE that different
port ranges are used for the PocketPC than for the PC...
and that it why the default router config doesn't include these ports
(but netgear does).

ClientID: RealOnePlayer_2.0.0_May 23 2002 20:48:45_wince_pocketpc_arm
(The version I'm using is version 1.1 from their website.)

===========
But, the RealPlayer 10 website does include this range in the client
for the PC (I haven't found a Mobile player equivelant list) -
Maybe I've just been lucky!

By default, the RealPlayer 10 uses the following ports to connect:

- TCP 80, 554, 4040, 7070, 8080, 443 (SSL for sign-in), 1755 (MMS
Windows Media requests)
- UDP 6970-32,000, 1755 (MMS Windows Media resend requests)
- HTTP 80 (AU, Messaging Service, and HTTP Cloaking)
===============

So, you would say 'just open up/forward' those ports... Well, again,
the actual port changes each time AND my VoIP router does not support
port ranges... AND only supports forwarding 6 ports! D-Link
took down that issue and said I should keep an eye on firmware changes
in the future...

Any decent free PPC / PPC packet sniffers around? I'm currently using
a PPC demo.

Thanks

I'll have to dig around and find a sniffer program for the ppc that I could
try. I had one for ppc 2002 but it doesn't work for windows mobile 2003.

Well, I had an idea... but it doesn't seem that it'd help.

This VoIP router doesn't have a DMZ - so I can't even 'test' it that
way.

I was thinking about turning off NAT (there is a setting for turning
off NAT and turning off DHCP) and opening up ports in the firewall.
The firewall does support port ranges. I would then connect a router
to the VoIP router, to both support multiple machines and also protect
my PCs/PocketPC.

I asked D-Link... unfortunately, I got a person who didn't know the
device - so I was playing a game of telephone. That person was told
that it could be done. I then realized that I may be compromising the
security of the VoIP portion -- and it sounded like that person was
told that it could be an issue. I don't know how the VoIP works to
know enough about that...

I've spoken to DLink 3 times now... with three different knowledge
levels of the product.... I'd probably like to run the NAT idea off of
someone else there....

It would be nice if I could prod Realplayer to use a different range
of ports... the range that the PC normally uses... (As I've said,
the range that the PPC is using, IS within the legal limits of the
Realplayer 10 (for PCs)... The Client ID is not in the registry, so
it isn't as simple as changing that...

Ideas anyone?

Well, the PC Realplayer client allows you to force which ports to use.
Not so with the PPC version.

There is some interesting documentation about the RTSP communication
between the client and server on Real's website... Nothing specific to
the Mobile client (about using different ports - etc).

I tried adding the relevant Registry keys from the PC version, to my
PPC.. Nothing.

Interestingly, when I specified one of the 'bad' ports on the PC's
RealPlayer... the audio still worked.

I did a port scan of the bad ports from the PC -- and they are not
shown as open (same as shown from the PPC).

I tried to install a packet sniffer on the PC -- it crashed... I'll
try again later to see if it's somehow working with those ports
on the PC.

This is becoming too much of an obsession!

Using a packet sniffer, I can see that the PC client is using the
upper 6xxx and lower 7xxx ports.

If I force it to use the high 2xxxx ports.. it doesn't seem to.. and
seems to revert to TCP...

I don't know why they made the Mobile client use different network
ports... maybe it has something to do with using common code with
the Cellphone ports?

Well, I've been in email correspondence with someone at Real who has
access to the sourcecode of the Real One Player Mobile for PPC.. He
said that "MinUDPPort" and "MaxUDPPort" had to be added to the
registry.
under \software\realnetworks\realplayermobile\config

I tried adding them as String Values and it did NOT work.

He then told me:
"You need to create new keys (rather than string values) under
"\software\realnetworks\realplayermobile\config" called "MinUDPPort"
and
"MaxUDPPort" and set their values to the lower and upper ports,
respectively."

He only has tried this via a remote registry editor from his PC...
and didn't have access to a PPC.
I told him that the keys don't hold anything directly on the PPC (at
least using PHM regedit)... On the PC, you get a (Default) when you
create a new key.
I even tried to manually create a (Default) and Default under new keys
called MinUPDPort and MaxUDPPort... Nothing.

I've been using a packet sniffer to double check that I wasn't
specifying closed port.. Nope... the registry settings were being
ignored..

Could someone else try this and see if they see the PPC client change
ports?
Any suggestions as to what I may be gettign wrong in my registry
editing?

Thanks!

Personally I wouldn't use the application if it required registry hacks.
I'm not sure what streaming music you are accessing ... but I'm pleased with
the offerings at www.shoutcast.com which allows me to use the free
TodayPlayer which installs with no hacking.

Well, I need it to play online content which is encoded in RealAudio format.
I don't think there are any other players which play RealAudio... correct
me if I'm wrong...

The Helix group is working on a PocketPC player... but it's still in development.
