Recording music - upgrade MacBook Pro or buy new laptop?

Hi all,

I'm looking to record music on my laptop (not EDM, just guitar, vox, etc.). At the moment I have:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Option one is I put a Samsung 860 Pro 512GB SSD in the MacBook, download Logic Pro X, and start recording...

Option two is I buy a more up-to-date laptop (heard good things about Dell XPS) - it'll perform better and (hopefully) last longer.

What do you think? Thanks in advance for any pointers!

Depends. The Samsung 860pro will cost in the region of £85 - 140 (in the UK), and Logic Pro was £200 last time I checked - do you want to spend up to £350 on your macbook, or do you want to put that money towards a new machine?

I'm kind of in the same position - I didn't buy Logic X when it was cheap beacuse Pro 9 still worked well. Now I'm faced with repairing and upgrading my pro or leaving it.

The one thing I will say is that the Mac trackpad is so much better for music software than any other laptop I've ever used. The ability to scroll side to side as well as up & down, and pinch to zoom etc is so helpful when editing.
