Rectify windows 7 start menu edit problems

In windows 7, a new installation 64 bit pro. I am unable to unlock the start menu and recent programs remains populated. I can change the settings in customise but the settings do not save, any ideas?

Sorry, I'm not quite understanding the question. Are you trying to prevent the "recently used programs" from showing in the Start Menu? Have you tried the following:

- Right-click the "Start" orb and select "Properties"
- Make sure the "Start Menu" tab is selected
- UNcheck the "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu"
- Click the "OK" or "Apply" buttons.

The last step is important, the menu settings won't be changed unless you do it.

Also, once you've done that and you want to remove items from the start menu simply right click them and select "Remove from this list"
