Solution


Generally the LEDs are contained on separate daughterboards, due to the way the chassis are designed. The motherboard is usually very low inside the case, which is inconvenient placing for LEDs that are on top of the case. There's little danger, here.
 
Laptop components are generally SMT. You will not find SMT soldering equipment down at your local Rat Shack.

My advice - live with the original LED colors.
