ReplayTV reboots/freezes

My ReplayTV 5160 recently began rebooting spontaneously; it won't go
an hour without doing so. It happens when off, when recording or when
playing back. Sometimes upon booting it will freeze at the "Please
wait..." screen; once it healed itself after several hours, and
another time I was able to boot it successfully by pulling power for a
minute, something that many times doesn't work. Any ideas on what
could be wrong?

Thanks
John

Could be a bad hard disk as mike said. Sometimes errors seem to fix
themselves, but are still present and cause trouble later.

The only time I got such frequent reboots was when I tried to run
DVArchive and WiRNS on the same computer.

Sounds like a bad hard disk to me.

Replays have one component that wears out (The hard drive) and that is
my guess number one. It is possible that something else is causing it
but the HD would be guess #1.

Oh yes, bad hard drive will cause this (As will a few other bad parts)

There is also a module in the power supply line that can cause this,
turns out this module can be safely removed and bypassed. But alas
since my replays do not have it (And I don't know if yours does) I do
not know what it is (But if memory serves yours does not have it either)

Only 2K and 3K Replays have the power interrupt module.

I thought that (power interruptor module) was just found in OLDER
Replays. None of my 5xxx units have one.

Yep, had the same thing happen to me. Of course, by the time I realized it
was happening, I'd screwed up half a night of recording.

I got WiRNS to work, just on a different computer. My Replays still
have "showguard" (records an extra 5 min. when it can to help avoid
the loss of the end of a show) enabled.

One of my 4504's exhibit this behavior, or have.
Of course I know for a fact the hard drive should be suspect... the
whole unit took a 4 foot fall to the [carpeted thankfully] floor.

If I toggle the system to "bypass" when it finishes booting and begins
to buffer live input I can keep it running. However when this condition
happens, it will buffer live tv for a bit then stutter, then freeze,
then reboot.

The last it did this was about 10 minutes prior to LOST beginning.
Obviously I was upset and had to deal with misbehaving technology and an
upset spouse.

That was the semi-final straw. The next day I downloaded any shows I
cared about and did a factory reset. To be sure the image partition
would be different I adjusted the photo partition to a new size as part
of the setup.

A side benefit was I re-entered all of my themes and show channels from
scratch -- this was a good thing after a few years of use.

The original drive was only a 40GB and the stutter problem always
appeared when the drive was fairly full and the buffer would hit a
certain spot; so far the drive is still pretty empty and no problems.
If it fills again and acts up I will upgrade it's drive, my other 4504
has a 250GB drive in it.

So your choices are:

1) image a new drive and upgrade to a clean system
2) image a new drive and optionally copy over your shows
3) copy over the system and shows partitions to a new drive
or
4) reset to factory defaults
5) reimage original drive (which will reset to factory defaults

You may not need a new drive. Try #5 above before trying #1. I just
fixed a Replay (thay was losing shows and corrupting the Replay guide)
that way.

That is true, however I wrote them out in that fashion and left a part
out; I would upgrade to a newer/larger drive if doing options 1-3.

Options 4/5 are for those that don't wish to spend any money [yet].

Upgrade to a larger drive if you'd use the space.

I was going to upgrade my Replay (I already had a 250GB drive, the
largest at the time), but never did because of DVArchive. That 250GB
drive is now in my computer.

>Options 4/5 are for those that don't wish to spend any money [yet].

I did enable the whole 80GB on my 5060.

It appears you are correct. Eventually the HD starting making very
loud "head seeking" noises.
